Cool weather lifts sales
The colder weather has helped push up retail sales, new figures from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) have revealed.
The BRC's Retail Sales Monitor for September showed that sales increased by 3% on a like-for-like basis, compared to a year earlier.
The weather was credited with lifting clothing and footwear sales, while food sales remained good but were weaker than earlier in the year. Furniture and large home purchases were weaker again.
The BRC says interest rate rises and financial concerns are stopping consumers from making major purchases.
