Taxman sends out penalty notices

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has started sending out penalty notices to businesses which have not sent their 2006-07 Employers' Annual Return (P14s and P35) and Contractors' Annual Return (CIS36).

The returns were due in on 19 May 2007 and those businesses which have not sent them face penalties of £100 per 50 employees or subcontractors for each month outstanding.

HMRC urged businesses which have not sent their returns to do so or to get in touch to explain why they have not done so.

It said in some cases, it would be able to cancel the penalties.
