City centre revamps threaten small shops
Local shops are being further pushed out of town centres due to modernisation, it's been claimed.
Refurbished town and city centres are charging rents that only big retailers can afford, effectively freezing out independents, This Is Money reported.
Property companies looking for big profits are backing some of the redevelopments and expecting a good return for their investments.
Last year, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Small Shops warned that independent retailers will vanish from city streets as soon as 2015 if the current trend continues.
