Supplementary business rate proposal opposed
Business lobby groups appear united in their opposition to the Government's plans to introduce a supplementary business rate, which would allow local councils to raise further revenue for projects directly from local enterprises.
The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) said firms must have a vote on such a tax.
A spokesman said:
"This would give councils almost unfettered authority to raise vast amounts of money without the need to win support through the ballot box."
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) said variable regional business rates would be a backwards step.
The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) said it was "completely unacceptable" that businesses may have to pay up to an extra 10% on their rates without a vote.
