Sunday trading laws may be challenged again

Laws which currently allow small shops unlimited opening hours on Sundays but confine the large multiples to shorter hours are coming under pressure again.

Supermarket giant Asda is reportedly talking to lobby groups and is said to be planning the next stage of the campaign for after the next election.

It is a year since the Government rejected a change in Sunday trading hours, which allow small shops to decide their own opening hours but prevent larger stores from opening for more than six hours between 10am and 6pm on Sundays.

Deregulate, the lobby group aiming to change the law, said the current legislation was inconsistent and confusing, This Is Money reported.
