Shops back call for alcohol crackdown

The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS), which represents smaller, independent shops, is backing calls for tougher rules on drinking in the street.

The organisation spoke out after Chief Constable of Cheshire Peter Fahy called for more regulations to control anti-social behaviour caused by alcohol.

A spokesman said:

"We need a culture change where people recognise that drinking to get drunk whilst under age is illegal and not a tolerable right of passage."

However, the ACS says it would oppose any moves to increase the minimum age for buying alcohol.

The spokesman added:

"Raising the drinking age to 21 is not the answer. Not only would it do nothing to prevent young people from getting hold of alcohol by means other than buying it themselves, it would alienate a generation of young adults that should wish to drink and do so responsibly.

"Instead, more work needs to be done to promote a responsible attitude towards alcohol from young people."
