Organic food air freight concerns
Organic food from abroad may soon not be classed as such because of the huge distances involved in transporting it to Britain.
The Soil Association, which certifies organic food in the UK, has been discussing the issue with interested parties at an air freight summit.
It is concerned about the environmental impact and says that air freighting food causes more greenhouse gases per food mile that any other type of transport.
The summit is part of a 12-month consultation, which began in January, on how to tackle the issue.
The Soil Association said that no decision had yet been made on banning air freighted food.
