North-South divide not going away

The North-South divide is alive and well when it comes to England's towns and cities, a new report has claimed.

Reading was found to be the fastest growing English town or city, followed by Bristol, Southampton, and Cambridge. The only northern place to make it into the top five was York, at number five.

The findings, published by think-tank Centre for Cities at ippr, are based on employment, population growth and skills.

The bottom five performing cities were Newcastle, Sunderland, Birmingham, Middlesbrough and Liverpool.

Centre for Cities said that England had 'two-track' cities and the "urban renaissance is unfinished business".
