E-mailaholics can't let go

More than half of business users are 'e-mailaholics' according to a new study that claims people are finding it difficult to turn their back on their computers.

The Inbox/Outbox 2007 survey by Mesmo Consultancy found that business users still check their e-mails while on holiday and when they're off sick.

Some 12% of respondents admitted checking their e-mails more than five times a day while out of the office. Most admitted this was self-inflicted, rather than an expected behaviour.

A Mesmo spokeswoman said:

"The majority of users are expecting to receive a reply to a business e-mail in less than 24 hours. And if a reply is sent immediately, that sets the expectation for the next round of communications, fostering a very reactive and rather unproductive way of working."
