'Bag tax' plan criticised
Plans to introduce a 'tax' on plastic bags in London are being criticised by the British Retail Consortium (BRC).
London's Borough Councils want to use the London Local Authorities Bill to impose the tax as part of attempts to reduce the amount of waste going into landfill.
The BRC said retailers had recently come to a voluntary agreement with the Government and had pledged to reduce the environmental impact of plastic bags by 25%.
It added that plastic bags represented just a fraction of 1% of waste going to landfill.
