Government urged to re-examine water freight

The Government is being encouraged to look again at Britain's waterways as a greener way to transport goods.

Congestion on the roads is costing around £17 billion annually, but the Government is ignoring the option provided by inland waterways and commercial shipping to transport freight, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) said.

The BCC has set out a number of recommendations for the Government, including setting up an integrated freight unit involving a number of Government departments and ensuring the planning system recognises that port and inland waterway infrastructures must be protected.
