FSB demands action to halt postal strike
Action must be taken to prevent the forthcoming postal strike from going ahead, according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), which is concerned about its potential effects on the economy.
The lobby group said both the Royal Mail and the Communication Workers' Union (CWU), which announced members had voted in favour of strike action in a pay dispute, should meet to thrash out a compromise. The FSB asked the Government to intervene if an agreement could not be reached.
The FSB says a postal stoppage would be "disastrous" for small firms and therefore for the economy as a whole.
A spokesman said:
"Small businesses would be hardest hit by this dispute. They employ over half of the private sector workforce in the UK and are totally reliant on the Royal Mail. Other mail providers do not offer an alternative to small firms because of their size."A cheque delayed in the post can mean the difference between life and death for a small business, which means that this strike cannot be allowed to go ahead."
