Firms need to know online selling obligations
Many businesses selling goods online don't know their obligations under the Distance Selling Obligations, which provide protection for consumers buying products over the Internet.
Firms could also do more to provide consumers' concerns about their privacy and security, according to a new Office of Fair Trading (OFT) report into Internet shopping.
The OFT says that although the online market is massive and benefits both buyers and sellers, more can be done to make the most of its opportunities.
It now plans to work with businesses, public bodies and consumer groups to make sure firms can access clear advice about selling online and ensure they address consumer concerns about security and privacy.
The report said more than 20 million people shopped online in the UK last year, and the market is now worth more than £21.4 billion.
