Bank wants more fivers in circulation

The Bank of England says it wants high street banks to start issuing additional five pound notes to get more fivers in good condition into circulation.

The Bank's governor, Mervyn King, said it was vital there was an adequate supply of low-denomination notes available for small transactions.

However, the high street banks are loath to issue fivers through cash machines because it is less economical for them.

Mr King said there was an ample supply of new fivers waiting to be used, The Scotsman reported.
