Smoking law warning issued

Businesses that don't comply with new anti-smoking regulations in the workplace could face costly litigation from staff if they don't protect non-smoking employees from the effects of cigarette smoke, it's been claimed.

The English ban on smoking in public places comes into force on 1 July, following Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, where it has already been outlawed.

The Engineering Employers' Federation (EEF) says business owners should take all possible steps to comply with the law, because they could face legal claims from staff and fines of up to £2,500, The Northern Echo reported.

Employers have a legal obligation to ensure there are 'No smoking' signs in the workplace and lighting up will also be banned in work vehicles.
