Shoppers still want cheques, report says
Shops considering banning cheque payments should think again, after a survey showed more than half of customers still want to use them.
The study, by Which?, found six out of ten shoppers find using cheques "very useful". That's despite a fall in usage as more people pay over the counter with their debit and credit cards.
Petrol retailer Shell stopped accepting cheques in 2005, while Boots has also banned them. ASDA and Tesco are running pilot schemes to see how customers feel about a cheque ban, the BBC reported.
The number of cheques being written every day halved between 1990 and 2005.
