Shoplifters must be treated like criminals, says BRC

Shoplifters must be treated like criminals and "not naughty schoolboys", the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has demanded.

It says the Government's new plans for tackling anti-social behaviour push shoplifting even further down the scale of wrong-doing, and puts it on a par with littering and swearing in public.

The Government wants to tackle some anti-social behaviours - including shoplifting in some cases - with on-the-spot fines known as Penalty Notice for Disorder (PND).

The BRC said such an approach is "wholly inappropriate" to dealing with shoplifters, who take on average £150 of goods each time.
