Pharmacy regulators recommended by report

The way pharmacists are regulated is set to be brought into line with other healthcare professions.

Lord Carter of Coles, who has been looking at the issue for the Government, has announced his findings. He recommended that there are two bodies - a general pharmaceutical council and a leadership body - in line with Government plans.

The changes are considered necessary as pharmacists are increasingly delivering patient care and advice in addition to dispensing drugs.

Health Minister, Lord Hunt, said:

"In the past, pharmacy has not necessarily been given the recognition it so clearly deserves as a core sector of the health service.

"As we deliver more patient care in primary care and community settings the role of pharmacists will continue to grow and develop."
