Spray paint safety warning issued

Vehicle paint sprayers are 96% more likely to develop asthma because of their job than the overall workforce, according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The problem has arisen because paint sprayers are exposed to harmful chemicals in paint mist.

The HSE says paint shops should be aware of how long their spraying areas take to clear and should display signs announcing this 'clearance time'. Sprayers should wear masks for the duration of this period.

A spokesman for the HSE said:

"Our advice about clearance times is simple. Know it. Show it - and then Do it."
