RDA roles questioned

The role of Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) needs to be significantly revamped if they are to tackle regional imbalances and improve economic performances for areas outside of London and the south east, a new report says.

Manufacturers' organisation EEF has sent its report, drawn up as part of its study into regional regeneration, to the Treasury.

It claims the RDAs have made little difference to economic growth in the eight years since they were created.

A spokesman said:

"Given the resources at their disposal, it is clear that the agencies have the potential to make a serious impact on the economies of the nine regions but we cannot continue with the status quo."
