EU mobile phone call costs to fall

Staying in touch with your business when you travel to Europe is set to cost less after the European Union (EU) finally turned its promises into action and acted to cap 'roaming' charges for mobile phone calls.

The cost of a call made in Europe could now fall by as much as 75% when the changes come into effect later this year. Text messaging is not covered by the plans.

In the first year, the cost of making a mobile call anywhere in the EU will be capped at 33p a minute while receiving one will cost a maximum of 16p a minute. In year two, that should fall further to 31p and 14.9p respectively.

Currently, British people pay £4.03 for a four-minute call made while in Spain. That should fall to £1.33 under the proposals, the BBC reported.

The changes now have to be rubber-stamped by the individual member states' governments.
