Clampdown on unfair selling practices
New regulations are to be introduced to prevent 31 types of unfair selling practices, including bogus 'closing down' sales, making persistent unwanted telephone calls to consumers and prize draw scams.
A consultation which will implement the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive (UCPD) has been published by Consumer Minister Ian McCartney.
He said:
"This new protection will make life a lot tougher for the rogues and easier for legitimate businesses to operate."
In addition to improving consumer protection, the new law will establish a safety net to catch unfair practices that fall between existing rules. The consultation ends on 21 August.
