The telecoms giant has more customers than Virgin Media and NTL: Telewest Broadband put together, with a customer base of more than 3.66 million. This gives it a 26% share of the UK broadband market.

BT was previously the UK's most used broadband provider until it lost pole position about a year ago.

The company announced the broadband figures as it revealed its annual pre-tax profits had increased by 15% to £2,495 million in the year to the end of March.
