Town bans plastic bags

A town in Devon has today become the first place in Britain to ban plastic bags after every trader agreed to supply environmentally friendly alternatives.

Modbury, which has a population of 1,553, hopes other places will follow its example. Instead of plastic carriers, shoppers can buy reusable, recycled, Fair Trade cotton bags costing from £1.50 to £3.95, or biodegradable paper bags which cost 5p and 10p each.

The scheme was initiated by a local wildlife photographer, who was concerned about the effects of plastic bags on animals.

All 44 shops in the town have handed over their stocks of plastic carriers, which will be recycled to make furniture, The Times reported.
