ASDA's 'Leave it with us' campaign is being trialled at stores in Dewsbury and York, where two giant wheelie bins are located outside.

Customers are being asked to return excess packaging or to put it in the bin as they leave the store. ASDA will photograph the waste and send evidence of overpackaging to its suppliers.

A spokesman said:

"We want to reduce packaging waste as quickly as we can, so it makes perfect sense to enlist the help of an entire army of our most vigilant allies - our customers."
