Older entrepreneurs multiply in Scotland
Increasing numbers of people aged over 50 are starting businesses in Scotland, and the number is expected to rise further as the baby boomer generation reaches retirement age.
The number of over-50s in Scotland is expected to increase by 28% in the next quarter of a century.
Scottish First Minister Jack McConnell said he could imagine a world where older entrepreneurs provide the services and products that their generation requires, and invest their skills and knowledge in the next generation.
The Scotsman reported on the example of one business owner, who set up his venture supplying and maintaining floating buoys and navigational aids around the UK's coastline, just before his 62nd birthday.
The Vessel Traffic Management Systems business now has a turnover of around £1.5 million and employs 15 people.
