Of the five million-plus people who now work from home in the UK, around a third are self-employed and run their own businesses from offices in their houses.

Around three-quarters of homeworkers rely on the Internet, while others store cash and stock at home. However, there are concerns that not all businesses are prepared to deal with blows such as a burglary or fire, the Yorkshire Evening Post reported.

Insurers are now offering specialist policies designed for those working from home.
