The US company announced a 52% increase in quarterly profits to £187 million - with a 26% rise in the number of British registered members.

The UK figure beats the international average increase of 21%, which brings eBay's global membership number to 233 million.

The number of payments made through eBay's PayPal service also increased by 51% in the first three months of the year, The Guardian reported.
