Car club set up as social enterprise

A pay-as-you-drive scheme has been launched as a social enterprise in the north east.

Option C Car Club has two cars, which members of the scheme access by a remotely activated credit card. It costs £10 a month to subscribe to the club, while cars are rented out for £4 an hour and 15p a mile.

The club, operating from Durham, has two spaces in the city centre car park where the vehicles are picked up and dropped off. It is aiming to have 100 members and 10 cars on its books by the end of the year, and then plans to expand elsewhere in the region.

The scheme received European Social Funding to help it get off the ground.
