New warnings over online fraud
Some 12% of people using the Internet have been the victims of fraud in the last year, according to a Government-backed scheme.
The Get Safe Online project said around 3.5 million people were online fraud victims in the last year, losing an average of £875 each.
Fraud during online shopping activities affected 6% of Internet users, while 4% were affected by general fraud and 3% were hit by credit card fraud, the Internet Safety: The State of the Nation report said.
The project said people needed to take greater care protecting themselves online and advised users to pay particular attention to the protection of website passwords.
