New 'wave and pay' cards trialled

A new generation of 'wave and pay' cards will increasingly be used to pay for small items like newspapers or a cup of coffee.

The prediction comes from the head of Visa Europe, who says Britain is set to become a cashless society within the next five years, as people find using plastic is more convenient than carrying pounds and pence.

Studies show that Britons tend to prefer paying with cash for items under £10 but the industry hopes to reverse that trend with these new cards, which are being trialled by Visa and Barclaycard, This is Money reported.
