Carrier bag reduction targets set
Retailers are showing off their green credentials by pledging to cut the environmental impact of carrier bags by a quarter.
The initiative aims to reach the 25% target by the end of next year by reducing the amount of raw materials and energy used in bag manufacture and by minimising the effects when they are thrown away.
The scheme is a partnership between the industry and the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP). It aims to make inroads by making lighter bags from alternative materials, encouraging their reuse and making it easier for people to recycle them.
The British Retail Consortium's (BRC) Nigel Smith said:
"This agreement is another demonstration of the retail industry's commitment to reducing the environmental impact of their operations."
