Certificates help shops to show green credentials

A scheme is being put together for shops to show how energy-efficient they are.

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) is developing energy certificates for shops, showing their energy consumption relating to their size. The stores will be able to display their certificates publicly, allowing comparisons to be made with other shops of a similar size.

There is currently no legal need for shops to do this, unlike some public sector buildings, which have to show their energy rating under European Union (EU) legislation.

However, the BRC says the plan shows that shops are "genuinely committed to reducing carbon emissions".
