Commercial support for university researchers

University research departments in Liverpool are receiving a helping hand to get their ideas onto the market.

A £750,000 Proof of Concept (PoC) fund has been put together by the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and the University of Liverpool.

Professor Jerry Turnbull told icLiverpool:

"This new fund is exactly the right type of funding that's needed to bridge the gap from the academic stage to running a business that will then attract real investment.

"It may seem like a small amount but it's the few tens of thousands at the beginning that stops things progressing. It pays for things like licence legal costs. Otherwise, it's an impassable hurdle. It could help a lot of small businesses spin out from the university and there will be a lot of demand to use the money."
