Businesses will consider road charging

Businesses will consider the possibility of some form of road charging - if the Government does something about the transport infrastructure, according to a leading lobby group.

The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) says 87% of its members are willing to consider some sort of road pricing system, so long as the money is used to make improvements.

Director-general David Frost said:

"Our members, small and medium-sized businesses from across the UK, have had enough and want a transport system fit for the 21st century.

"It is because of this that businesses are now prepared to contemplate the principle of road pricing."

His comments come as Prime Minister Tony Blair insists he will not back down from the idea, despite receiving a 1.8 million name petition opposing the plans.
