Employers urged to sign up to skills initiative

Employers are being urged to sign up to the Government's Skills Pledge to ensure that Britain has a better qualified workforce.

The initiative, launched by Chancellor Gordon Brown and Education Secretary Alan Johnson, aims to ensure all workers have at least the equivalent of five good GCSE passes.

The scheme will share responsibility for gaining skills between the state, employers and staff. Employers that sign up to the Skills Pledge will commit to a training plan designed to meet the needs of their business.

Mr Johnson told Workplace Law:

"Employers have a crucial role to play in this and must make skills training relevant for the challenges of the future. It is also vital we generate a culture of learning amongst individuals."
