New year, new food rules

Food law enforcement is set to change with a major policy review by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) in 2007.

The FSA is planning to introduce radical changes to the food law enforcement activities carried out by local authorities. The plans include a set of flexible interventions for improving businesses' compliance with the rules.

The Agency's news archive reports that it is leading a policy review, called the 'Changes to Local Authority Enforcement (CLAE)' project, which will help enforcement authorities to target resources more effectively.

The review, which seeks to implement ideas from the Hampton Review of 2005, should be completed by the end of 2007, and it is hoped that administrative burdens placed on businesses will be reduced as a result.
