Scottish shop opening ban

More good news for small shops in Scotland - large retailers are to be banned from opening on Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

But business leaders aren't very pleased, claiming it's "legislation gone mad".

Liz Cameron, of the Scottish Chambers of Commerce, told The Scotsman:

"The question of whether large retailers open on Christmas Day and New Year's Day is a matter for businesses and their employees, not Government."

Campaigners are hoping to overturn the New Year's Day part of the Scottish Parliament's Bill before it becomes law - claiming it sends out the message that Scotland is closed for business.

The regulations will not affect opening hours this festive season.
