Rural women lead the way

Entrepreneurial women are more likely to be found in the countryside than the town, with nearly twice as many rural women starting firms as their city-based sisters.

Figures from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor at London Business School show 6.6% of women living in the countryside start their own ventures, compared to 3.6% in towns. Black women of African origin were four and a half times more likely to start a business than White women.

Researchers reckon the decline in farming and the increased availability of broadband Internet connections are behind the boost in rural female entrepreneurs.

Rebecca Harding, executive director of Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, told Management-Issues:

"This isn't just about baking pies and selling them."
