Health and safety's top 'myths'

According to the Trades Union Congress (TUC), a lot of what we think is gospel about health and safety is actually nonsense.

It's put together a report listing the top 10 health and safety myths, and includes some of the 'half truths' that it reckons have been blown out of proportion by the media.

The TUC says there were more than twice as many health and safety laws and regulations 35 years ago than there are now.

Some of the classic myths include:

  • Health and safety regulations now ban the use of ladders.
  • Fireman's poles have been banned on health and safety grounds.
  • Trapeze artists will be forced to wear hard hats.

You can also find the truth behind the headlines, such as “Myth 7: Small businesses are being strangled by over-inspection and over-regulation. Statistically, the average small business is likely to receive a visit from inspectors only once every 20 years.
