Building a future

An architectural business and a construction firm are going into social entrepreneurship - by helping homeless people put a roof over their heads.

Homeless people living in the Cyrenians charity-run Elliott House hostel in Newcastle upon Tyne are to build six bedrooms, two bathrooms and some offices. The construction will be in the grounds of the hostel, which is a Grade II listed building.

They're being helped by architects Jane Darbyshire and David Kendall (JDDK) and Lumsden & Carroll Construction.

Alison Thornton-Sykes, of JDDK, told icNewcastle:

"The actual structures are fairly simple and a great example of how good design doesn't have to be complicated or expensive.

"The role of the professional project management team is to ensure the safety of the scheme and that the scheme is constructed as planned."
