Deprived areas prove a hotbed for new business

Business support measures in the most economically disadvantaged areas of England's south west are paying off.

That's according to a new report from the South West of England Regional Development Agency (SWRDA).

The agency's latest Regional Economic Profile, published twice a year, reveals that the region has the highest level of business start up among people located in the top 20% of England's most deprived areas.

The report also reveals that the region has higher than average levels of employment for the over-50s.

Nigel Jump, chief economist at SWRDA, said:

"This is part of our ongoing research into south west England's economy and how it performs in line with the objectives set out in the Regional Economic Strategy. Over time, we will be using the evidence published in the twice-yearly profile to help us gauge whether the region's economy is moving in the right direction."
