Red tape has cost £37 billion
Two days after the latest discrimination and maternity-related legislation came into force, a business lobby group is claiming new employment laws have cost business £37 billion since 1998.
The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) says the Government needs to "get smarter" in the way it regulates the workplace - but claims just 2% of employers reckon it will deliver on deregulation and simplification.
The CBI says there have been 35 new employment rights introduced in the last nine years.
Spokesman John Cridland said:
"Regulation has its place but the red tape it generates must not be allowed to undermine a company's ability to get on with the day to day job of delivering to customers, increasing competitiveness and developing the business."
