That's what's happening in Japan, where a railway company is trying to harness the power of its customers' footsteps to generate electricity.

In a pilot project, the Easy Japan Railway Company has placed a device that converts footsteps into power underground at six of the eight ticketing booths at one of the exits to JR Tokyo Station, the Daily Yomiuri reported.

The station caters for 760,000 passengers daily.
