Post Offices fight for future
Postmasters from across the UK are in London today to demand that the Government doesn't pull the rug from under their feet.
The National Federation of SubPostmasters (NFSP) is handing in a four million name petition to Downing Street, and is holding a rally in the capital to highlight its plight.
It's widely predicted that the Government will demand Post Office closures as part of its subsidy renewal agreement. The network is losing £200 million each year and receives an annual subsidy of £150 million.
Around 4,000 Post Offices have been closed between 1999 and 2005, mainly in rural areas.
Colin Baker of the NFSP told the BBC:
"The 28 million customers who use the Post Office every week are confused as to what the Government wants of the network and of the people who run it."We believe that the time is now overdue for ministers to decide."
