A sweet success
If you've come up with a food product you want to be around for a long time, you could do worse than take a leaf out of Tate & Lyle's book.
Lyle's Golden Syrup, which has been sold in its distinctive green and gold tin since 1885, has been named Britain's oldest brand.
It was originally a by-product of sugar refined in London. Now, nearly a million tins a month leave the factory, with customers as far afield as China and Australia.
In tests, a massive 86% of consumers recognised the brand.
Victorian expert, Dr Kate Thomas, said:
"The 19th century was the boom era for packaged foods and many of the named brands of biscuits, chocolate and condiments that we still know and use, were developed then."
