Copy warning for retail businesses

High street fashion chain New Look has withdrawn more than 1,000 pairs of shoes - after a claim it had infringed design rights.

New Look has agreed an out of court settlement with designer Jimmy Choo, including a £80,000 payment over the Bonbon shoes.

Lawyers from Berwin Leighton Paisner say it's an example of the increasing likelihood for designers to take action against shops, especially in the fashion sector.

Under new European legislation, it's no longer a defence for a retailer to claim they didn't know they were selling a "copied" product.
