Wales and west set the pace

Welsh and west of England small and medium-sized enterprises showed the biggest employment growth in the UK in the second quarter of the year, according to figures from an accountancy firm.

PKF's SME Index of 800 firms showed that small businesses in Wales and the West Country had a rating of 54.3 points (anything over 50 is considered positive) for the three months to the end of June. That was the biggest increase in the UK.

Spokesman Tim Smith told icWales:

"Throughout the second quarter, employment in Wales and the south west was above the UK average.

"But Wales is not immune to rising energy and raw materials costs, and it is likely these pressures will have an effect on its performance in the next quarter."
