Broadband boost

High-speed Internet access could be on its way to rural areas that haven't been able to join the broadband revolution.

Telecoms regulator Ofcom is looking at boosting the power of Wi-Fi signals, which are currently only available in some city centres.

By increasing the power of Wi-Fi signals, it would cost a lot less to bring broadband to areas which still only have dial-up Internet access, because fewer transmitters would be needed.

James Saunders, from Wi-Fi company The Cloud, told the BBC:

"We think it could provide great opportunities in rural areas that are currently without broadband.

"It makes it much more possible to put up a wireless network."
