Waste not, want not

A charity is taking the lead in offering businesses a green way to dispose of food - seven million tonnes of which ends up in landfill sites every year.

Food charity FareShare is starting up the FareShare 1st scheme to take away surplus food, then distribute what is edible and dispose of the rest as animal feed or by composting it. And it's not only environmentally friendly - the scheme will also offer a cheaper alternative for businesses compared with sending waste to landfill.

The firm expects to make £250,000 in profit by its fourth year. All profits will be put back into the charity.

Chief executive Tony Lowe told The Guardian:

"It's a tragedy that so much food goes straight into the ground. Now companies can not only help their communities, but they will also get a green alternative to landfill and make a saving on their disposal costs."
